Great opportunity at Commercial Manager level to work within a well-established and highly regarded print group.

As you would expect, this is a key appointment for our client. The main focus of the role is to shape and drive forward the commercial operations in line with strategic business objectives to deliver exceptional customer service, greater efficiency and improved company profitability.

The Commercial Manager role is strategically focused, although the successful candidate will also work at an operational level in certain areas and at certain periods.

Principle objectives:


  • Develop and implement an agreed strategy and structure for the commercial operations to support the business in its confidential, elections and commercial markets.
  • Lead the Commercial team to ensure excellent service to all internal and external customers.
  • Plan, organise and manage commercial operations to ensure timely delivery of all services.
  • Provide commercial and contractual analysis to support delivery of improved profitability.
  • Coach and mentor the Commercial team to develop the capability within the department.

Specific objectives (the following provides a summary of the departmental responsibilities)


Develop and maintain a clear understanding of the underlying business and its key drivers.

Agree with SMT the key actions required to deliver the commercial strategy, and communicate the plan for the implementation of the actions.

Ensure that Control & Governance are implemented and adhered to.


Review the commercial team structure (in terms of competency and coverage) to ensure it is appropriate to deliver its objectives.

Analysis and Reporting

Provide insightful management information and commentary.

Support the identification and delivery of cost saving initiatives.

Provide commercial support and challenge to proposed activities, performing financial analysis including investment appraisal as necessary.

Ensuring adherence to internal financial timetables in all respects.

Preparing a monthly evaluation of Work In Progress and reconciling recorded inputs/outputs.

Analysing recorded activity and costs to report on performance against budget on a monthly/YTD basis.

Preparing ad hoc analysis on markets/clients/processes to support ongoing review and improvement of internal process/manufacturing efficiency.

Provide support to business planning, budgeting and forecasting activity.


Working with the Finance Department, responsibility for accurate cost rates within the MIS system together with the estimating principles employed for the costing of work.

Ensure appropriate cost control around activities of defined strategic & support functions.

Ensure that actual, forecast and budgeted costs are fully understood at all times.

Act as a conduit for all cost issues and ensuring appropriate information is provided.

Tenders and estimates

Manage the preparation of financial proposals/estimates detailing specification, prices and terms/conditions in a timely manner.

Supports the sales function across the business to maintain profitable relationships with clients as well as expanding and increasing growth with new and existing accounts.

Evaluating sales opportunities in terms of cost and feasibility to create detailed specifications and project plans identifying requirements for operational processes, labour hours, materials, outsourced processes and delivery.

Assessing appropriate pricing levels based on historical data and market intelligence and preparing analysis of potential benefit to the company.

Working with Sales Department to agree pricing to all clients/prospects.


Support the Procurement Manager in the procurement of a broad range of materials and services, including management of supplier base and contracts.

Legal and Contractual

Preparation, negotiation and management of all company contracts.

Review commercial contracts and advise on feasibility/return on investment/potential risks

Deliver creative solutions to Operations and Business Development teams when crafting bid responses.

Identify and control risk in all customer and supplier relationships.

Person specification

The ideal candidate has successfully led a Commercial team to high internal and external client satisfaction and meets most or all of the following requirements:


  • Strong background in commercial management/development at senior/strategic level.
  • Proven experience working with internal senior team members and clients.
  • Strong leadership experience managing a team; hands-on management & coaching
  • Highly commercially and strategically minded.
  • Demonstrable track record of developing commercial strategy/services.
  • Capable of providing insightful and balanced views on business risks and issues.
  • Ability to analyse business needs and conceive, design and develop innovative solutions.
  • Experienced in the review of commercial contracts and terms.
  • Proven ability to add value via analysis and reporting.
  • Proven ability to increase profitability and drive commercial thinking/processes in a growing business.

A strong strategic and tactical thinker, with the ability to balance the short term financial pressures of the business and long term strategic goals.

Personal Requirements:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Experienced working for small and medium sized businesses.
  • Proven ability to think laterally, solve problems and foster relationships.
  • Passion for successfully delivering commercial services to internal/external clients.
  • Proven success developing high performing teams.
